The coin's center freely interprets Galileo's allegorical painting "la fisica antica." The issue year is below a globe on a desk, with the mintmark "R" to the left and the engraver's initials "LDS" to the right. "SAN MARINO" arcs above, and "ANNO MONDIALE DELLA FISICA" runs along the bottom inner edge. The outer ring features the 12 EU stars, interrupted by the lines of a stylized atom spanning the coin's background.
